I own a MAADI Misr post-ban; yes, the "cheap piece of $300 crap" many of you have dismissed as a "Misr-able" piece of junk. I, for one, love this weapon, as it is a virtual duplicate of the Soviet AKM. Recently, I had an experience which serves, I think, to justify my faith in this weapon, and serves also as a testament to Mikhail's genius. I was out shooting with by brother and father, and we were shooting, among other things, both my Bushmaster XM-15E2S "Shorty" and my Maadi. Well, my brother was firing the Maadi, and at one point the rifle fired with a distinctly weak recoil and different sound, and failed to extract. At first I feared a dud cartridge and possibly a bullet stuck in the barrel, but by sliding a cleaning rod down the barrel I was able to dislodge the case. Upon examining the case I found that is was split almost the entire length of the case, and further, the neck appeared strangely elongated...it was, however, upon examining the head of the case that the nature of the problem was revealed. All the ammo we were using was Wolf steel cased. As most of you know, both the 5.56mm and 7.62mm Wolf cartridges are lacquered green, making it difficult to tell the rounds apart at a quick glance. (Many of you, at this point, see where this is going...) The case which I had extracted from my 7.62mm Maadi was a 5.56mm case! I had somehow loaded a 5.56mm round into my Maadi magazine, and the weapon had fired the round! Due, I suppose, to the smaller diameter of the 5.56mm bullet, the round was fired with, I imagine, rather low velocity, and thus the lack of recoil. The smaller case size explains, perhaps, the failure to extract. However, no harm came to the weapon, and after field stripping and examining the weapon, we continued firing it for the rest of the day without incident. Truly, a remarkable design! Anyone interested in seeing a hi-res scanned image of the case, which is truly a sight to behold, email me, jeriah@hotmail.com, and I will send it to you. -JR Hildwine |
