7.62x39 was invented by German designer Vollmer

    The 7.62x39 cartridge was developed to Vollmer's gas action
"Maschinenkarabin" patented in the beginning of 1930's.
Vollmer was one of the firearms designers that continued
their work in Russia after the WWII. He is also told to
have taken part in AK-47 development.

Russians Yelisarov & Syemin later adopted the cartridge and
shifted the bullet diameter tolerance a bit larger to suit
Russian military bullets. The modern 7,62x39 was born.
