Softtips and hollowpoints tend to mushroom when they hit something. What was unusual was the smaller chunk breaking off and creating an exit wound. If you really want to see some eye opening statistics, check out the downrange energy of the 5.56 and 5.45. At 500 yards they've got about the same kinetic energy as a .22 long rifle and both American and Russian troops have complained about the lack of penetration of either round. Kind of off topic, but here's a link about the M16 and the 5.56 in Vietnam. |
