If you accept the AK for what it is, it is close to perfection. It's simpler, cheaper and more reliable than any of the competition. In fact nothing else even comes close. Too many people are expecting the AK to be something it's not. It's not a sniper rifle, (even the AK's that are "sniper rifles" aren't very good sniper rifles), and it's not the best rifle at any price. The folks that like the AR15/M16 ussually like to do a lot of target shooting. The AR15 is generally a more accurate rifle and if you NEED a rifle that will shoot 1MOA or better it is a better choice. Personally I think these people are largely a bunch of fools. They try to squeeze accuracy out of an already finicky rifle and make it even more unreliable. The rifles they end up with might shoot 1/2" groups, but the fact is that you will probably never need that kind of accuracy in combat, (particularly if you look at the kinetic energy of the 5.56 at long range). They're measuring the value of a combat rifle by something which won't really matter much in combat. If you really need precision accuracy get a bolt action. You'll outshoot the AR's for a lot less money. Bolt actions are the most accurate rifles made, so following the AR peoples logic that should make them the ultimate combat rifle. One other thing to remember; the AK will digest anything you feed it and keep working. If you shoot lacquered ammo or ammo loaded with the wrong powder the AR15 will soon start having problems. |
