Romak III - Questions
 Author: TC© July 22, 2001 at 08:35:58
Even though the 7.62x54R Romak III is not a true "Dragunov" sniper rifle for the reasons we all already know about, I am curious about the "real" functionality and reliability of this otherwise cool and unique looking weapon before I jump into the ownership category of one (it will either be a Romak III or a .308 VEPR - have not decided yet). I have read the boards about the slam fire and blow up potential due to the soft primers or higher seated primers in some of the more recent commercial ammo on the market.
I have also seen comments about frequent jams due to the 54R case length in this AK action, which was designed for the 7.62.39 round. I suppose if military surplus were used primarily, or well seated hard primers on QUALITY reloads, then the aforementioned problems should not occur. Correct? Is it possible to add a spring to the firing pin, such as in the Russian TIGR? Has any owner considered this or had it done?
I have read that the fit and finish of the Romak III is rather rough, considering the high price of this weapon. The only one I saw at a show here in Phoenix some time back appeared to be like any other standard AK type weapon, which is to say, not as nicely finished as a real Russian SVD, TIGR, or especially the new VEPR. But, it still looked pretty sweet with that blonde wood and all. (Hmmmm...now I am wondering if the VEPR has a firing pin spring...)
Anyway, I would appreciate some serious experienced feedback without sinister or off the wall remarks from certain ones (you know who you are) before I lay out the cash for the Romak III or the .308 VEPR II. Thanks.
