Romak day at the range.

Took the new Romak to the desert this weekend for a little
testing and while not what I was hoping for, it did not
blow up which I suppose is worth something. We set some
wood pallets up at 700 yards as measured with my Bushnell
laser range finder. We used B27 targets which are apx the
size of a 350 lb hoodlum. Anyway, the Russian and Chinese
ball just would not print a group on pallet so we switched
to the Russian "Sniper" packed ammo and it grouped 3 out of
5 on target after the scope was cranked to the limit,
reading 1000meters. Might have to try some shiming or
filing. Anyway, we had two boxes of Norma soft point and it
was able to keep 4 out of 5 rounds on target and was by far
the best ammo tested. All shooting was from a bench rest
and the barrel cleaned between each 5 shot group. One
noticable problem was that if the barrel was not allowed to
cool completly between rounds, it was a guaranteed miss. We
think the shots were flying high when the barrel was warm
as we could not see impact. After the Romak had consumed
all the fodder we had for it we tried a friend's old
Remington 742 which is a semi auto deer gun in 30-06. Ammo
for the Remington was Winchester 150gr power point plus
(Cheap at Walmart!) and it had a Weaver 4x scope mounted on
it. Using the point of the lower plex, we were shocked that
it would keep 5 out of 5 on target every time. Groups were
pretty good, best being 7 inches but most being about 8 to
9 inches. Far better than the Romak, maybe half the size on
average. My friend turned down my offer to trade even up
but maybe after some fire lapping and cryo treatment, the
Romak can make a better showing. Worst thing was eating
crow all the way home... Will post new results after I
figure out how to get this Romak to shoot. Chow.
