David Fortier had a good tip on reducing the length of pull on your military SVD and it reminded me of this common myth I hear now and again. There is this idea that the AK and SVD stocks are so short because "Thems Russkies have shorter arms than us". Everytime I hear some dealer or wanna be RKI at the range say that I laugh. The stocks are made shorter because they have to take the winter weather in to consideration when designing these rifles. In the very cold Russian and Eastern European climates, the soldiers have to wear very thick coats. If they tried to aim with all that padding with a standard length buttstock, it would be very difficult to get as good cheek weld. So the stocks are shortened to compensate. In the warm weather a rubber recoil pad is sometimes used to increase the length, but most commonly the soldiers just get used to using the shorter stocks. And no, their arms ar NOT shorter than American's and western European's. |
