Just read a tale recounted my a Marine Major who participated in the liberation of Kuwait. His battalion took over an Iraqi position, and the Major asked the Iraqi XO if he had any snipers in place. The Iraqi pointed a spot out in the rocks, and the Major took some marines up there to have a look. Well, the sniper was long gone, but he left his brand new Russian SVD laying there on the sandbags, with a round still in the chamber! Well, the Major, being a competition shooter, was very happy, and snagged the rifle for his personal collection. Of course, word at the time was that soldiers couldn't rbing back any automatic weapons, such as AK-47, etc, but since this was a semi, nobody figured it would be a problem.
Then when it came time to go back stateside, the airlines had MPs there who snagged it. Turnes out NO firearms were permitted to be kept as soveineirs, not even semi-autos or handguns. They wouldn't even let him keep the optics. Ghod he must have had steam coming out of his ears, watching those REMFs take his Russian Drag! They probably smashed it under a tank, the way they did most of the other guns they found.
Y'know, my grandad brought home a luger liberated from Germany, and it gave him a prideful rememberance of his time in the service. The military sure has changed.
